keyboard instrument + voice - in the bleak winter.
In the Bleak Winter (almost definitely subconsciously copied from Harlod Darke's carol "In the Bleak Midwinter") was my attempt to create a song of the same aesthetic as something out of the American Songbook, as I owe to it a lot of my interest in performing music. I thought this would be a perfect time to do something like this as I misinterpreted the assessment to be a max of 24 bars, which is silly, but I made it work. For a piece that is that short in terms of writing, I had to push it a bit, and thus slowed it down to 80 bpm and made it 5/4, which gave me an interesting challenge of trying to make it sound authentic. The lyrics are boring and kind of nonsensical, when I had the idea for the main line "In the bleak winter" I couldn't get anything else in it's place, and thus it stayed and the lyrical content of the piece continued. I chose a tenor vocal because I'm a tenor, and in the midst of this whole virus thing, it's harder for me to get other people to sing for me as I write notes about what sounds good. I would've actually performed this, but I'm not that good at piano or vocals, and thus it is only recreated in terrible MIDI sounds.
