to be corporeal.
This year I was accepted into the inaugural Sound Film Lab, held by both Tura New Music and STRUT Dance, where 6 dancers and 4 musicians got together and made some films. On the whole, it was amazing working with other people who I probably wouldn't of met otherwise, and it broadened my horizons in both movement and film making.
What I ended up making (and being fairly proud of) is a piece named to be corporeal., which was a fun exploration into fun editing tricks, time manipulation and directing dance. It was a lot of fun and fairly nonrestrictive creatively (at least in my experience), which really helped me flourish.
For those who wish for a fancier, more artsy explanation of the piece:

to be corporeal is an exploration of what it means to have a body, a sense of self, and the mess and confusion that can come from that, especially in my experiences as a trans woman. Though it may feel like your definition, the thing that defines you, is up in the air, chaotic and incomprehensible, it's important to stop thinking through the lens of anxiety and uncertainty, and observe yourself like you would a statue in an art gallery, finding beauty in the small things that make you who you are.
Thank you to Adelina Larsson Mendoza and Deborah May for leading the lab, Briannah Davis and Xin Ong for starring in my lil film, the rest of the lab crew (Aisha, Tessa, Jess, Zaki, Matt, Moses, & Sophia) for being great, and STRUT Dance and Tura for having me!
